The talk will describe the architecture of Netapp's filers and its evolution; the services provided by the filer, including multiprotocol security coordination and file locking; and cost-effective techniques for improving data integrity. Next, we look at some "smart disk" features, and discuss issues with using them effectively in a filer environment. Finally, we some propose a few disk features that the filer could easily exploit.
