The Things Network

Speaker: Thomas Telkamp

Abstract

The Things Network is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a decentralized, open and crowdsourced Internet of Things data network, owned and operated by its users.

The Things Network builds their data network with LPWAN technology (Low Power Wide Area Network). This relatively novel technology is especially suitable for long range communication while ensuring low battery usage. LPWAN uses a low bandwidth, meaning that the ideal size of the messages are only a few bytes in size. The data rates concerning this technology are between 0.3 kbps up to 50 kbps.

In this talk, we will look at the technology behind The Things Network --LoRa and LoRaWAN-- as well as the distributed architecture of the network itself.
