IPv6 insecurities from a pen-testing standpoint

Abstract

Built into IPv6 are several options to make IP traffic more safe. Unfortunately, using those can introduce leaks as well, if only by enabling IPv6 and forgetting to properly set up filtering. In this presentation we will focus on new risks that the introduction and use of IPv6 may involve. Besides the security options IPv6 has a much larger address space than IPv4. This has consequences for penetration testing. For example, will you still be able to search for specific systems within such a large network range? Several techniques have already been developed to do this. These are also discussed in this presentation.

Biography

Already during his studies in computing science, Walter Belgers had a keen interest in security. After his graduation, he has worked for several companies in the security field and is currently Principal Security Consultant and partner at Madison Gurkha, a company based in the smartest region of the world.

Apart from performing security tests, Walter leads a team of testers. When he finds the time, he likes to speak at conferences and write articles about security-related topics. Over ten years ago, Walter was already teaching people about the, then quite new, IPv6 protocol. His hobbies include drifting in an old car, lock-picking, sailing, riding a motorcycle and reading.
